Anything practiced with attention can be healing
A frequent question in the clinic is, “Can I go to the gym with this injury?” “Is there anything I should avoid right now?” “Can I shovel the snow?”
The short answer is “Yes, you can do anything you feel comfortable and safe doing.”
Don’t push yourself. Don’t apply your old judgements of what shovelling looks like or how fast your should run. Listen and act right now, right here.
The common question I would ask my patients to help them understand what works for them is, “How do you feel between 1 and 10?”
When they’re hurting, they’d often answer something like a 3 or 4.
So, my suggestion to them becomes, “Go to the gym as be a 3 or 4 out of ten.”
Do move. Do listen. Do learn. You’ll heal faster that way.
